"The Lodi United Methodist church members as followers of Christ -
believe that the purpose of our church is to preach, teach, and witness
to the gospel, to care for the needs of our community and world
missions, and to live in a caring, loving, trusting and accepting way,
in order to glorify God in all things."
"This Weeks Service and Other Thoughts"
Hi Everyone,
Be sure to
read carefully. Perhaps, you will get the gist of my message
before I make my point toward the end of this section.
1. Drew
waited for Sue and I at the train station with the boys.
2. Darin and
Nicole have been searching for a doctor to examine her back.
3. Jack and
Jill was going up the hill before he tumbled down.
4. Poor
Jack. He don't understand the laws of gravity.
5. Who are
you waiting for?
6. Mary
asked Jane, "Can I have that piece of cake?"
7. Your
right! The Indians failed to make the playoffs.
8. There
belongings were missing.
9. She's
smarter than me.
10. Please
forgive Jack and she for the work they should of done.
I cast no
aspersions on anyone who finds the above sentences acceptable, but
in each of the ten sentences there is at least one glaring
grammatical mistake for which my English teaching mother would have
severely chastised me. I have intentionally listed the above
examples to illustrate that I have heard recently similar
breaches of the English language in everyday speech and also on the
radio. I spend a great deal of time in the car and there is a
commercial for Niagara Falls casino that has the phrase "for Bob and
I" in it. Since "for" is a preposition the object of the
preposition must be in the objective case and "I" is nonnative case.
Whoever created this advertisement was obviously unaware of the
mistake being made. (Trust me when I say that I understand that you
might not care about proper grammar.)
I'm
(relatively) certain that when we stand at the Pearly Gates, St.
Peter will not give us an English exam, but my Hebrew teacher was
pretty emphatic that if we wanted to speak to God that we would need
to speak in the Biblical language. My point in the
above illustrations is that mistakes can become so commonplace that
in time they evolve to become the standard. As this relates to
our spoken language, some might find the trend egregious but hardly
earth shattering; however, when mistakes (sin) work their way into
our everyday lives and become routine and our innate sense of right
and wrong is compromised by long term exposure to what is wrong,
then we lose our internal safety systems that protect us from
falling prey to the insidious ways of evil. For my mother (and
I'm sure many others), poor grammar was like hearing fingernails
screech across a blackboard. It was immediately recognizable.
Likewise, for all of us, evil (even cloaked in innocent trappings)
should create in us the same chills. Never should it become
acceptable. Whether it is an inadvertent slip of the tongue
that uses God's name in vain or it is the unconscionable acceptance
of millions of dollars in Golden Parachutes while employees are
losing their jobs and their homes, wrong should be immediately
recognizable and combated.
Don't worry
about your English. I'm sure I make many mistakes all the
time. Do, however, never let wrong choices in life become
commonplace and eventually seem acceptable. Dave

We’re Counting On You! The trustees wish to
share some exciting news …
Plans are now in place to replace the flooring in the
Fellowship Hall and Entryway!
We are hoping to complete this project by the Holidays!
What we now need is both your financial and volunteer
support. This project
CANNOT be started until we have the money in hand. Just as you did when
we remodeled the Sanctuary, we need your help and support. Please consider
writing a check to the church, specifically designating it to the:

Any questions, contact Jerry Marshall, ____________ WE NEED YOUR INPUT Almost all
of our information on the computer that was stolen was backed up and
thus retrievable, but the Membership database was not. This
was not an oversight on our part. It was because
the software used for the data was a part of the MyChurch pictorial
directory which was a proprietary (not available to others)
system. We will not make this mistake again, but in the meantime,
we must reenter all the data. Yes, we have the hard copies in
many cases of the information you submitted many years ago, but we
still feel that we should ask EVERYONE for updated information.
What is requested is listed below. Name Spouse Children (even adult
children) ________ HAYRIDE AND
BONFIRE ---- October 12th, 5:00 PM at
Baughmans 9918 Repp Rd. We will have hot dogs and sloppy joes
provided so feel free to bring snacks and/or dessert. Please, bring
your own beverages.
___________
CHURCH KEYS
If you have
reason to want a key to the church and have not been granted that
request --- yet, please be patient. Only an extremely limited
number of keys are being issued and the persons receiving these keys
are being determined by the Trustees. The plan is to
potentially install a number keypad and individuals will be given
their own access code. This procedure will actually track who
has entered the building and at what time. Until this concept
is either installed, modified, or abandoned, please be understanding
and know that we will work with you as much as possible.
___________
KNITTED HATS
Our knitters
have been very busy.
The "hat" count is at 116 - and climbing :)
The array of hats in the sanctuary is testimony to the efforts being
put forth and the gifts Feed My Sheep people will be getting this
Fall when the winds of change head our way. If you cannot
knit, purchase yarn for someone who can! Several have done
this already, and the results have been WONDERFUL!!!
